Anger is a part of being human. Part of being civilized is to manage that anger before it bites your keester. Novelist Alice Hoffman during one hot moment saw flames so red, she didn’t care, and she Twittered her rage to the world! This event is a week or so old and many, I’m sure have heard about it, but it got me thinking: What MUST somebody DO to you that you would feel justified in whatever you might do to them? In this case, one writer reviewed the book of another and actually gave away the plot! Bad, bad, bad, BUT, was it bad enough to give Hoffman the right to Tweet her reviewer’s HOME telephone number!? While fellow novelist Jennifer Weiner sought to put Ms. Hoffman’s rage into its proper context, some said the internet has turned on Ms. Hoffman with a vengeance. From another perspective Mary Elizabeth Williams, took a look back at Hoffman’s own past as a critic and asked: “…Who’s sorry now?” All of this says: As wonderful as the PROPER use of Social Media can be to any marketer, entrepreneur, or business owner, it — like EVERYthing else — on the Internet becomes a part of a computer archive somewhere, likely Google’s.
Interestingly, Ms. Hoffman was just beginning to find her own way to use Twitter to her best advantage when this blow-up occurred. As evidenced in one forum, she’d started telling fictional stories one tweet at a time! How interesting THAT must have been for her fans! Sadly, the “AliceHof” Twitter account is now nowhere to be found.
Take away point: Tweet YOUR story, one tweet at a time, and keep your public persona on track by keeping your temper under wraps! Social Media is ALL about relationships — their creation, their care, and their feeding.
Peace and Love,
